Most times, I feel like diy skincare or personal care recipes get the job done. Which is great. But I really like it when my skincare works wonders on my skin.
Whenever I'm coming up with a recipe, I go all mad scientist in my kitchen and work the ingredients until I come up with something that is truly effective. I don't want to be disappointed that I'm tossing out my toxic (yet effective) skincare, so I really try to replace it with homemade skincare that works - may I say - even BETTER than my beloved chemical-filled products.
If you're coming over here from Instagram, you've probably watched my clean skin care routine that I posted in my stories and saved to my highlights. You can actually watch those stories from your desktop too! Just click here.
If you're curious why I made the switch to clean skincare (and other things), check out my post here where I wrote out my acne and depression story + my entire clean skincare routine.
This recipe that I'm sharing with you today works better for me than even a $150 serum I've purchased (and loved). And the cost of this recipe breaks down to $14.90 per bottle. That's a total win in my book.
*Before I dive into the recipe, I want to share a word of warning about using a diy recipe on your skin. Please do a patch test for a day or two before slathering a concoction of ingredients all over your face. The essential oils and the other carrier oils in this recipe are wonderful and deliver so many benefits to the skin. However, as with any natural ingredient, some people are sensitive to them. Please use caution.
**I have used many different brands of essential oils since starting to use them 3-4 years ago. However, I ALWAYS come back to Young Living essential oils every single time. Their quality and effectiveness is simply unmatched. For your safety, and to receive the full benefits of this serum on your skin, I recommend purchasing your oils from Young Living. (Click on the tab in the upper right hand corner of this website called "essential oils" to learn more and of course feel free to shoot me an email with any questions.)
I have 30 year-old, dry, acne-prone skin. So, I have chosen the oils and essential oils listed below to work for my specific issues. I will list out some of the benefits of each of the ingredients and you can choose which you would like to use.
Storing this serum in a dark amber glass bottle is very important for keeping oils pure. Light deteriorates essential oils and pure, high grade essential oils can actually damage plastic bottles! Check out my post here to see what pretty glass bottles and containers I like to keep on hand for my diy recipes.
Let's dive into the glorious benefits of the ingredients in the serum....
The carrier oils & their benefits:
Pomegranate Seed Oil (this is the one I use). Pomegranate seed oil has a high concentration of ellagaic acid which is an antioxidant. It is very hydrating and reduces skin inflammation. It fights against free radicals.
Rosehip seed oil (I get this one). It has anti-aging properties, protects against age spots, helps with eczema and acne scaring, and is a great source of vitamin C.
Vitamin E oil (this one). Vitamin E fights free radicals, prevents wrinkles, moisturizes, and helps scars.
Jojoba oil (I get this one). Jojoba oil is very healing and moisturizing. It helps keep oil levels balanced. It contains Iodine which fights harmful bacteria growth which leads to breakouts.
The essential oils & their benefits:
Jasmine: Jasmine oil is considered an antibiotic and antiviral — therefore, it can help calm skin irritation and inflammation.
Rose. The benefits of rose oil are numerous, but here are a few of the reasons why I added rose eo to this serum: rose oil can improve acne, balance hormones, relieve anxiety, improve depression - (which, if you know my story, then you know why these benefits are important to me), reduces rosacea, and increases your skin’s permeability (ability to absorb the other nutrients in your skincare - hopefully it all has wholesome ingredients!)
Sacred Sandalwood: It soothes, tightens, and cleanses the skin. Sacred Sandalwood also reduces inflammation from mild skin irritations (i.e. acne) and is high in antioxidants that can help reduce damage caused by free radicals.
Cedarwood: has anti-inflammatory agents, reduces skin irritations, cures acne, and tightens muscles.
Vetiver: Vetiver oil heals scars by promoting the regeneration of skin and tissue. It rejuvenates the skin and removes dark spots or signs of acne. It’s also an anti-aging oil and effectively treats stretch marks. It reduces the possibility of infection and kills bacteria.
Patchouli: It is amazing for acne and eczema, inflammation, and irritated skin. It also has cell-rejuvenating properties (read: anti-aging!).
*Lavender: Lavender essential oil has many benefits, but I chose it for this recipe because it restores skin complexion, reduces acne, and slows aging with powerful antioxidants.
Orange: Increases circulation and kills bacteria and pathogens. Since orange eo is full of vitamin C, it helps fight signs of aging and dark spots since it promotes the production of collagen. Orange eo also has antioxidants.
*Frankincense: This serum would not be the powerhouse it is without frankincense eo. "Frankincense has the ability to strengthen skin and improve its tone, elasticity, defense mechanisms against bacteria or blemishes, and appearance as someone ages. It may help tone and lift skin, reduce the appearance of scars and acne, and heals wounds. It may also be beneficial for fading of stretch marks, surgery scars or marks associated with pregnancy, and for healing dry or cracked skin." - Dr. Josh Axe
Basil: Basil essential oil is one of several essential oils that can effectively kill skin pathogens that lead to acne breakouts. However, it is not too drying.
Geranium: Geranium essential oil has astringent properties so it tightens the skin and muscles and can reduce wrinkles. It improves circulation, fights against infection, and promotes cell growth (it helps to recycle dead cells and supports the regeneration of new cells).
Oakmoss: This Oakmoss is actually an absolute rather than an essential oil. It helps keep the skin smooth and soft and regulates oils production. It is an antiseptic and it is anti-aging. Consider leaving this oil out of your recipe if you are pregnant/nursing, or at least check with your doctor first.
*Lavender and Frankincense are both in the starter kit. Even just those two oils will deliver a mighty, calming + anti-aging punch. Sometimes, I will just use rosehip seed oil and Frankincense as my serum and it's AMAZING. Read more about the starter kit here.
1/2 tsp Pomegranate Seed Oil
2 tsp Rosehip Seed Oil
1/2 tsp Vitamin E Oil
1 tsp Jojoba Oil
2 drops each of the following essential oils:
Add the carrier oils and essential oils into your amber glass dropper bottle in no particular order. Mix all of the ingredients together by gently shaking before each use (I use this morning and night after my toner and before my moisturizer).
How is that for a powerhouse of a serum?
If you do not already own some or most of these oils, the initial purchase of them can make the recipe quite expensive upfront. But, I did some math for you, and if you break down the cost of the essential oils and carrier oils, each bottle of serum only costs $14.90!!! (provided you are purchasing at the Young Living wholesale price versus the retail price - just ask me about that and I can help you get the discount).
If you try this recipe, please let me know what you think!
