How to Choose the Right Oil for Your Skin Type (and what oils I use)

If you are someone who likes to make their own skincare tinctures, face masks, and oil cleansers, then you’ve probably wondered what oil(s) to use and when to use them.

Everyone’s skin is a bit different than the next person, so it would make sense that your skin might benefit more (or less) from a particular oil.

I use carrier oils for all kinds of purposes. I cleanse my face with oil at night. I moisturize my face with oil morning and night. I make hair masks with oil. And I use oils when I’m making essential oil rollers. I keep quite a few different oils on hand so that I can whip up recipes as needed.

When you’re trying to decide on an oil to use on your face, it’s really important to look up the comedogenicity rating. This rating tells you how likely an oil is to clog your pores. This is VERY important :).

The ratings are on a scale from 0-5:

0 – Will not clog pores

1 – Low

2 – Moderately low

3 – Moderate

4 – Fairly high

5 – High

I would suggest choosing an oil with a rating of 0-2. However, everyone’s skin is different and can handle more or less.

Hempseed oil: for oily acne-prone skin

Grapeseed oil: for oily, acne-prone skin. absorbs easily, no greasy residue

Rosehip seed oil: for oily/combo/normal skin. great for reducing hyper-pigmentation

Jojoba oil: for any skin type! This is my personal favorite.

Sunflower oil: for dry, acne-prone skin

Sweet Almond oil: for most skin types

I have dry, acne-prone skin. For my personal glow serum, I like to make it with a mix of jojoba oil, rosehip seed oil, and pomegranate seed oil. Pomegranate seed oil is way too thick to use by itself, but I love adding it to my moisturizers! It has amazing anti-aging properties and helps plump the skin.

I like to tweak and play with my DIY serum every time I make it. I make a more complicated recipe (see HERE for the recipe) sometimes, but I also just make a simple version a lot too (see HERE for the recipe).

When I first started making the switch to nontoxic skincare, I made things really simple and just bought jojoba oil. I used it to oil cleanse (instead of harsh foaming cleansers) and also to moisturize! Double duty! My skin went from constant, painful breakouts to calm and clear within DAYS. My skin clearing up was also due to the fact that I was ditching so many other toxins I had been putting on my body and replacing with safer options. My hormones could finally balance out.

Eventually, I felt like my dry skin needed more than just jojoba oil, so that’s when I started experimenting. I used a combination of carrier oils and started adding in various essential oils to further support my skin.

Although I NEVER use coconut oil on my face (except in a pinch to remove stubborn eye makeup), I do love to use coconut oil on my hair as a mask and in my essential oil rollers (I use fractionated coconut oil for those).
